The ZAL Port committed to sustainable development

La ZAL Port comprometida con el desarrollo sostenible

We intensify our social and ecological commitment with concrete actions that allow us to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

At the ZAL Port we are fully aware of the effects we are experiencing due to climate change and its negative impact worldwide. For this reason, in 2016 we approved our First Strategic Environmental Plan and we obtained different certifications such as the ISO 14001 environmental management system, among others. Now, we renew and intensify our commitment with the Strategic Plan for Corporate Social Responsibility (2019-20-21), which has as its focal point the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG 2030), committing ourselves to minimize our ecological footprint and to build a better world.

The environmental investment made by CILSA - managing entity of the ZAL Port - is focused above all on the construction of warehouses in accordance with LEED standards and in 2019 also on the remodelling of the Service Center’s offices that has been done with energy efficiency criteria. This investment was 476,000 euros in 2018 and in 2019 it rose to 509,000 euros.

Currently, we are focusing our efforts on the objectives that we can act directly on, such as the efficient use of water resources or the reduction of CO2 emissions.

According to UN information, approximately 70% of all the water extracted from rivers, lakes and aquifers is used for irrigation. For this reason, we focus our efforts on reducing the consumption of irrigation water and introducing sustainable gardening. A type of gardening that allows us not only to save water but also to minimize the use of plant protection products, machinery and polluting fuel.

Along with strict monitoring of consumption and raising awareness among stakeholders, the ZAL Port is currently working on a project to replace grass areas by a Mediterranean garden with drip irrigation. On the other hand, we are analysing the possibility of recovering rainwater.

Energy is the main contributor to climate change, representing around 60% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, efficient energy management and CO2 emissions minimization are two very significant aspects of our environmental and energy management system.

Throughout these last years we have implemented the Air Handling Unit (AHU), a variable flow system, a LED light system or an integral control system, among others. In addition, since 2018 we have worked to promote the use of electric vehicles and with this objective, we have installed chargers for cars and motorcycles and the vehicles of the ZAL Port are already electric. Also, since 2018 our electricity consumption comes from renewable sources, eliminating CO2 emissions related to electricity consumption

Finally, the 2019 remodeling of CILSA’s offices and the Service Center has been done with criteria - opening of the facade to gain natural lighting and air conditioning control, for example - that have allowed us to obtain the A classification for energy efficiency.

With the aim of reducing residue, in 2017 we implemented a computerized system that facilitate the monitoring and analysis of selective collection. Thanks to this system, important improvements have been introduced and, although in the last three years there has been a rise in the waste as a consequence of the significant increase in business activity, the typology that has increased the most, specifically a 93%, has been the selective collection.

Our challenge is to reduce the traffic of private cars that access the ZAL Port, ensuring sustainable mobility alternatives. In order to achieve this, we participate in the APB Environmental Quality Working Group and in the Mobility Table of the Delta del Llobregat. We work to improve public transport, the bicycle lane and the empowerment of the electric vehicle.

“To successfully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must swiftly move from commitments to action. And, to do that, we need strong, inclusive and integrated partnerships at all levels” said the former Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon. Aware that the effectiveness of our Strategic Plan lies in the commitment, but also in the alliances with our stakeholders, we participate and lead working groups with our community such as the Port Authority of Barcelona, the Delta del Llobregat or the Ecopark.

The objective of the ZAL Port is always to join efforts and make progress towards the 2030 Agenda. With the Strategic Plan for Corporate Social Responsibility (2019-20-21) we commit ourselves to continue fighting against climate change and we launch concrete actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
